Quote for today
I don't do boredom well. Whenever I am debating something new in my life I ask myself one question before moving forward; "What's the worst thing that could happen?" Then "go"...the knowledge of how is sometimes secondary to the vision.
January 19th~ One of my Birthday Celebrations at Old Canteen Restaurant
Joe Marzilli’s Old Canteen restaurant, which opened during Dwight Eisenhower’s first administration, in 1956, Mr. Marzilli was a legendary figure on the Hill, running an establishment where everybody knew your name and the menu was as reliable as the changing of the seasons.
His customers ran the gamut, from crooner Frank Sinatra and then-Sen. John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, to local wiseguys and several generations of Italian food aficionados.
In a 2002 interview with The Journal, Mr. Marzilli said one of the secrets to his eatery’s success was sticking with tradition and spurning avant-garde cuisine and flavor-of-the-week “foodie” courses.
“We’ve stayed in tune with those who like to come in and remember all the old-time cooking like they had at home and at grandma’s,” said Marzilli. “We are an old-fashioned Italian-American restaurant.
In a world in constant flux, Mr. Marzilli was proud that his establishment was an island of Old World familiarity and gentility.
“If people passed away 30 years ago and came back today and walked into the restaurant, they’d see that nothing has changed,” Marzilli said in the 2002 interview. And in 2011, nothing has changed. It is still one of the best places to dine in this state. I am proud and it has been an honor to have known Mr. Marzilli and his family and have been friends with them for 30 years!
Plates overflowing with osso buco, a big veal shank, is a specialty. The Old Canteen, which is run by his oldest son, Sal Marzilli, (seen here in the picture with Me) is also known for its pasta e fagiole and escarole and bean soups, its cacciatores, lasagnas and braciole. My personal favorite is the Veal Saltimbocca!
Thank you for a wonderful Birthday!!
*I want to personally thank my friend, Lynne Renehan Milot, for texting Me and asking what I was doing today. As this celebration was "reserved" for MOM. But my mother wasn't feeling well and had to cancel on Me. Lynne said I will go with you. Thank you for a wonderful lunch, gift and your and Rene's treat as well as your friendship! XO

My Birthday Celebration at Siena Restaurant with great friends...
Anthony and Chris Tarro own and manage both Siena Restaurant, located in Providence RI, and Siena Cucina · Enoteca, located in East Greenwich. I met Anthony Tarro while he was attending Hendricken High School through some mutual friends.
Located in the heart of Providence's Federal Hill, Siena Restaurant was opened in 2005 and features authentic Tuscan cuisine in a warm and lively atmosphere. While the brothers were raised in Warwick, R.I., their family has deep roots in the Italian-American community on Federal Hill making it the perfect location for their first restaurant.
Anthony's passion for food began at home watching his mother prepare meals for the family. He began working in food service in high school and has not stopped since. He is a graduate of the RI School of Design - Culinary Arts Program and earned his bachelor's degree in Food Service Management from Johnson and Wales University. He has studied Tuscan cuisine in Bologna, Italy.
Anthony has spent 20 years mastering his specialty of Italian cuisine. His accomplishments include being honored as chef of the year by the RI chapter of the American Culinary Federation and acting as chef for President George H. Bush on a visit to Rhode Island.
Although I did not dine in Siena on this evening, the food at Siena is also outstanding! I stopped in to see my friend Siena, who is a bartender there (and no relation to the owners I might add), she surprised Me with this wonderful dessert! Just what I needed, more dessert! It's going to be a long week at the Gym!
Thank you for a wonderful & delicious birthday surprise!

Hot Weiners or "Gaggers"-A Rhode Island MUST have.....
As far as Rhode Island regional cuisine goes, hot weiners are probably the most famous fast food delicacy there is. I might go so far to say, the Hot Weiner is even more popular than pizza strips, coffee milk and Dell's Lemonade combined.
Ever had a hot weiner? If you have, you'll know that Rhode Island's New York System's hot weiner sauce is made from a top secret recipe, guarded by the families that created them! See Site: http://www.olneyvillenewyorksystem.com/
"Olneyville New York System, in Providence's Olneyville neighborhood, is often cited as the "definitive" or "quintessential" vendor and dates to its opening by Greek immigrant Anthony Stevens in 1946. Stevens' cousin Gust Pappas ran Original New York System in the Smith Hill neighborhood, which claims its own founding as 1927. Still another institution, Coney Island System, claims an earlier date of 1915. There are dozens of establishments across the state that offer wieners, and the question of which is "best" is often contentious among residents" Wikipedia.
Recipe courtesy of Guy Fieri:
Cook Time:30 min
Level: Easy
Yield: 20 hot dogs
Ingredients
4 tablespoons margarine
2 yellow onions, minced, divided
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons paprika
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon curry
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 pound ground beef, 80/20
1/4 cup water
20 hot dogs
1 teaspoon salt
20 hot dog buns
Yellow mustard
2 tablespoons celery salt

Then add beef, stir thoroughly and cook for 5 minutes, add water and simmer over medium to low heat for 30 minutes.
In a medium sauce pot boil hot dogs with salt and steam buns.
When meat is done simmering, add meat mixture to the hot dog in the bun, top evenly with minced onion, yellow mustard, and a sprinkle celery salt.
Prescott Farm, Portsmouth
photo compliments:James Clayton Sattel
Prescott Farm offers a glimpse of early rural New England through its buildings and landscape. The Farm traces its origin to the early 18th century when the Nichols-Overing House (c. 1730) was central to the site. Doris Duke, through the Newport Restoration Foundation, purchased the 40–acre farm with the idea of preserving open space and the Nichols–Overing House, as well as creating a setting for additional historic buildings that were rescued from imminent demolition.

John Gordon, The Murder Trial-Last Man executed in R.I. 160 years ago....
by Channing Gray of the Projo/Journal Art Writer
For the next six weeks, Cranston’s refurbished Park Cinema, now the Rhode Island Center for the Performing Arts, is hosting “The Murder Trial of John Gordon,” an original play by Newporter Ken Dooley, who grew up one block from the Park.
Dooley believes there’s no question Gordon was wrongly convicted in the 1845 trial that resulted in the 29-year-old being sent to the gallows.
Dooley, a former theater critic and the author of 38 books (his play about winning basketball coach Red Auerbach comes to the Park in the spring), said he’s always been fascinated by the Gordon case, ever since he was a lad listening to his grandmother sing a song about the trial in the beating death of influential mill owner Amasa Sprague on the last day of 1843. All 23 characters in the play are based on the historical record, save one, Ryan Murphy, whom Dooley created to set the stage by telling us what Irish immigrants encountered when they arrived in Rhode Island.
John Gordon had been in this country for only a few months before he was arrested for the murder of Sprague, who had used his political clout to have the Cranston City Council pull the liquor license of John’s brother, Nicholas Gordon. Sprague was upset that his employees, most of whom were Irish, were buying liquor at Gordon’s store and showing up at work drunk.
Now there was bad blood between Sprague and the Gordon clan. So when Sprague’s body was discovered, suspicion immediately fell on the three Gordon brothers: Nicholas, John and William. It was surmised that Nicholas brought his two brothers from Ireland to kill Sprague.
The evidence was circumstantial. And, Dooley says, there was strong anti-Irish sentiment at the time. Add to that the political influence of William Sprague, who resigned his U.S. Senate seat to devote himself to finding his brother’s killer, and, Dooley says, John Gordon didn’t stand much of a chance.
All three brothers were arrested and put on trial for murder. Brother William was found innocent. Nicholas’ trial ended in a hung jury. That left John, who was convicted of the crime.
The strongest evidence presented by the prosecution to convict John Gordon had to do with a broken gun found at the crime scene that was said to belong to Nicholas. The prosecution hammered home the fact that the Gordon brothers could not prove the weapon found at the scene didn’t in fact belong to Nicholas; the brothers were unable to produce the gun he owned.
But after John’s conviction, William Gordon admitted to the defense attorney that, after Sprague was found dead, he had hidden the gun away out of fear. William later produced the weapon and the defense lawyer filed an appeal to overturn the conviction. That appeal, however, was turned down.
The case then went before the General Assembly, which was asked to commute John Gordon’s sentence. That appeal was defeated by a narrow margin.
An appeal was then made to Gov. James Fenner for a stay of execution. But Fenner, a close friend of William Sprague, rejected the request. John Gordon was hanged.
His funeral was attended by Irish immigrants from as far away as New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut. It is said it took all day for the line of mourners to pass the home where Gordon’s body had been taken.
Those who see the play can, of course, draw their own conclusions. But Dooley, who has worked with local historians Patrick Conley and Scott Malloy, the URI professor, thinks his play reveals the real killer, a hulking Irishman by the name of Peter Dolan, who was fired by Sprague a week before the murder for showing up drunk and busting up one of the looms in Sprague’s Cranston mill. Dolan had been heard issuing threats against Sprague. He disappeared the day of the murder and was never seen again.
Dooley, who also directs his play, cites a statement by Gordon’s priest that he maintains indicates Gordon’s innocence. The priest told Gordon just before he was sent to the gallows that he wouldn’t be the first Irish immigrant to become a martyr to bigotry. Why would the priest say that, asks Dooley, if Gordon had admitted the crime during his final Confession?
Sentiment is still strong surrounding the case. On St. Patrick’s Day, Newport state Rep. Peter Martin, vice president of the state board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Irish Catholic fraternal order, plans to introduce legislation that would exonerate Gordon.
“The Murder Trial of John Gordon” takes place Friday-Sunday through Feb. 27 at the Rhode Island Center for the Performing Arts, 848 Park Ave., Cranston. Tickets are $30, with a 15 percent discount for students and seniors. Call (401) 467-7275 or visit www.parktheatreri.com.

BREAD & MILK Origins.....The True Story...
It's the one question that comes quickly to any Southern New Englander when a big storm is about to hit: "Do you have your bread and Milk?"
It's even on the facebook page in the Top 10: You know your from Rhode Island when......."You load up on milk and bread before a snowstorm."
Local newscaster Frank Colletta did some searching and here's what he discovered about this Southern New England phenomenon: http://www2.turnto10.com/weather/2011/jan/11/true-origins-stocking-bread-and-milk-ar-358980/?referer=None&shorturl=http://turnto10.com/ar/358980/

Coastal council to vote on Champlin's Marina Extention-Block Island
The state's coastal council is not letting the threatened winter storm keep it from finally trying to conclude Tuesday night the seven-year regulatory battle over Champlin's Marina's plans to expand into four additional acres of Block Island's Great Salt Pond.
The council meets at 5:30 p.m. at Narragansett Town Hall for a final vote.
Lawyers for and against the expansion will be allowed to make final, oral legal arguments before the full Coastal Resources Management Council votes. It appears the full, four-acre expansion plan will be at issue. Several compromises have been considered and reviewed as the case made its way through a council subcommittee, the full council and three different courts of law.
If the full proposal is approved, the marina would expand to covering 13 acres of water with 140 additional boats.
A number of Block Islanders have rented rooms so they can come to the mainland to witness the vote. Many are concerned that high winds will prevent their return to the island Wednesday on the Block Island ferry.

Edgewood Yacht Club Ablaze....
Photo compliments: Kathy Lanni
This 103 year old building, that has withstood decades of storms and hurricanes is gone from the landscape of Narragansett Bay in Cranston, RI. It was such a beautiful building and it is so sad to see it gone. Kathy woke at 4 am to see it ablaze and the worst sound was the collapse of the famous cupola. Firefighters were still on the scene at 6:16 am.

The club was constructed in 1908 by Murphy, Hindle & Wright in 1908 in a shingle style. The clubhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 1989.
The entire building was destroyed by fire during the morning of Wednesday, January 12, 2011. The fire began shortly after 4:00 am EST, and by 5:30 am, the building was gone. It was 103 years old.

Santa Mamba♪♫•-this Thursday Night at THE MET Pawtucket, RI
You all must know by now how I LOVE this Band & their Music!
Here's the 411:
Gio Murillo, Lead Vocals
Nick Wade, Bass
Aaron Wade, Keyboard/Accordion
John Medeiros, Lead Guitar
John Ferreira, Drums
Chris Fascione, Latin Percussion
Edward Cardenas, Vocals, Timbales,Auxiliary Percussion
Santa Mamba represents a new attitude in cross-cultural harmony. Where many bands who fall under the broad classification of “Latin” consist of musicians with a shared ethnic heritage, our story is different. We all come from different places and grew up in different times. Some of us come from small American towns where there was little access to anything outside of mainstream pop culture. Some of us grew up in American cities with strong ties to Italian and Portuguese traditions. Our lead singer has lived the life of an international traveler--born in Venezuela and raised in Brazil, he lived for a time in Italy before moving to the United States by way of Miami. Due to our diverse backgrounds, it is remarkable that we’ve come together at all, and in such an unlikely place as Rhode Island. We have little in common, besides that we were all born with a passion for music and an openness to it in all its varieties of expression. We have worked hard to claim our sound as a band. Since we don't come from a common cultural background, there was no obvious style to build our sound on. Each of us has brought what he’s learned from a life of loving and studying music; collectively, we have had to learn how to listen to sharply contrasting points of view and how to understand something that we once considered foreign. Over time we have forged a sound that we call Latin Roots Rock, taking a firm understanding of various Latin and American musical traditions and giving them new voice in a unique combination of styles and personalities. We pride ourselves on our performance, and always endeavor to create an experience for our audience. We set big goals for ourselves; our chief ambition is to get the whole world dancing.

Venda Ravioli makes USA Today's list of the top 10 places that offer a taste of Italy!
USA Today recommends 10 neighborhoods in America where you can celebrate Christmas with a host of traditions, from pasta to parades. The neighborhoods include the French Quarter in New Orleans, Little Italy in New York City, and the North End in Boston.
Here's what they had to say about Federal Hill in Providence:
This small neighborhood centers on Atwells Avenue, which is marked by a piazza and an arch adorned with a pine cone, an Italian symbol for abundance and hospitality. It's like being in Florence. They have music during the summer, and you can sit outside and have coffee. Many people come for Venda Ravioli, a huge store with 200 types of pasta, a bustling bakery and aisles of specialty products. Twas the month after Christmas......
Twas the month after Christmas and all through the house
Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.
The biscuits I’d nibbled, the eggnog I’d taste
At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.
When I got on the scales there arose such a number …
And when I walked to the shops – less a walk, more a lumber …
I’d remember the marvelous meals I’d prepared;
The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rare’d.
The cookies and chocolates, the bread and the cheese
And the way I’d never said, “No thank you please.”
As I dress myself in my partner’s old shirt
And prepared once again to do battle with dirt …
I said to myself, as I only can,
“You can’t spend a winter disguised as a man!”
So, away with the last of the sour cream dip,
Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip.
Every last bit of food that I like must be banished
‘Til all the additional pounds they have vanished.
I won’t have a cream cake … not even a lick …
I’ll want only to chew on a long celery stick.
I won’t have donuts, or shortbread, or pie,
I’ll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.
I’m hungry and angry, hate to go to the store,
But isn’t that what January is for?
I’m trying not to giggle, oh life is a riot …
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

2010 Closing Cyles: by Paulo Coelho MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!!
"One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through.Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished.
Did you lose your job? Has a loving relationship come to an end? Did you leave your parents’ house? Gone to live abroad? Has a long-lasting friendship ended all of a sudden? You can spend a long time wondering why this has happened.
You can tell yourself you won’t take another step until you find out why certain things that were so important and so solid in your life have turned into dust, just like that. But such an attitude will be awfully stressing for everyone involved: your parents, your husband or wife, your friends, your children, your sister.Everyone is finishing chapters, turning over new leaves, getting on with life, and they will all feel bad seeing you at a standstill.
Things pass, and the best we can do is to let them really go away.
That is why it is so important (however painful it may be!) to destroy souvenirs, move, give lots of things away to orphanages, sell or donate the books you have at home.
Everything in this visible world is a manifestation of the invisible world, of what is going on in our hearts – and getting rid of certain memories also means making some room for other memories to take their place.Let things go. Release them. Detach yourself from them.
Nobody plays this life with marked cards, so sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. Do not expect anything in return, do not expect your efforts to be appreciated your genius to be discovered, your love to be understood.
Stop turning on your emotional television to watch the same program over and over again, the one that shows how much you suffered from a certain loss: that is only poisoning you, nothing else.
Nothing is more dangerous than not accepting love relationships that are broken off, work that is promised but there is no starting date, decisions that are always put off waiting for the “ideal moment.”
Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished: tell yourself that what has passed will never come back.Remember that there was a time when you could live without that thing or that person – nothing is irreplaceable, a habit is not a need. This may sound so obvious, it may even be difficult, but it is very important.
Closing cycles. Not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because that no longer fits your life.
Shut the door, change the record, clean the house, shake off the dust.
Stop being who you were, and change into who you are.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!" ~Paulo Coelho
