West Warwick, RI 8 Years ago today~The Station Nightclub Fire

The Station nightclub fire was the fourth deadliest nightclub fire in American history, killing 100 people. It would be remiss of Me if I didn't mention this Anniversary.
Not only as a reminder, but with respect to all the lives lost in this horrific tragedy.

"The fire began at 11:07 PM EST, on Thursday, February 20, 2003, at The Station, a glam metal and rock n roll themed nightclub located at 211 Cowesett Ave. in West Warwick, Rhode Island."

"The fire was caused by pyrotechnics set off by the tour manager of the evening's headlining band, Great White, which ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings surrounding the stage. A fast-moving fire engulfed the club in 5½ minutes. Some 230 people were injured and another 132 escaped uninjured. Video footage of the fire shows its initial growth, billowing smoke which quickly made escape impossible, and the exit blockage which further hindered evacuation."

MANUEL BARROS JR.~Singer, Musician, Gentleman & Friend Extraordinaire

TWYCE

Rhode Island has lost a great Singer, Musician, Gentleman and someone I'm very proud to call, a Friend! When I first met Manny aka "Uncle Manny" Barros Jr., he was singing with Michael Vincent Davis, Steven Palumbo & John Vaughan~ a group collectively known as TWYCE. And what a collective and talented group!!
Many a night wherever they were playing, no matter the weather, my friend Janice & I would be sitting in the audience waiting for them to start singing so we could
get on the dance floor. Many great memories and wonderful extraordinary times...and of course, incredible talent and Music all under one roof! ♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥ .•*¨*•♫♪♪♫•*¨*•.¸¸♥ .•*¨*•♫

The picture above is that of a very fond memory. It was Manny who remembered it was MY Birthday and had the group sign/autograph a card. This was the picture on the cover which said, Happy Birthday.
Inside the card it said,
"To have a good friend is one of the highest delights of life; to be a good friend is one of the noblest and most difficult"....Happy Birthday to a Dear Friend. I treasure this card and have had it for years, as I'm certain it was Manny who made the card and chose the inscription.......

To get to know Manny and his professional accomplishments, I'm posting his Biography which is from his Web-site. Certainly this is anything better than I could have written right now. I have soooo many memorable evenings of his performances that I could share, but felt this was more appropriate.

"For over (4) decades Manny has been performing in many of Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut’s popular and finest entertainment venues."

"Manny began his music career as teenager in the band Twilighters, along with Jeffrey Osborne, Victor and Perry “Tiny”Tavares of “Tavares”, and John Byrd. As his teen years turn into adulthood he became the opening act for popular artists like Isaac Hayes, Barry White, The Orlons, and The Chiffons. By the mid 70’s Manny found himself in Philadelphia as a songwriter with Joe Jefferson and Charlie Simmons, song writers for the popular 70’s band the Spinners.

Manny’s love for music and an audience put back behind the microphone with “Perfect Time” a duo with his long time friend Milton Javery. After a brief hiatus Manny returned to the performing arts with the encouragement and coaching from Rose Weaver in an off Broadway tour of “Stepping Out”. By the early 80’s, he became the founder and leader of “Fokis” a popular dance band in many Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts dance clubs. As the 80’s drew to a close “Fokis” reorganized and expanded and became “TWYCE” one of Rhode Island’s favorite club entertainment.

With Manny Barros as manager and lead vocalist, an evening with “TWYCE “ was an evening to remember. Although the members of “TWYCE” has changed from the originals Manny Barros Jr, Frank Reis and John Byrd, to Michael V Davis, Steve Palumbo, Jon Vaughn, and Michelle Hill to the current members Jessie Baker Jr and Leatta Barrett, the sounds of “TWYCE” are forever etched in the memories of many weddings, birthdays, bar mitzvahs, Christmas and special Parties."~http://www.twyce4music.com/mannybarros/

Manny's Tribute page can be found at: http://www.twyce4music.com/tribute.htm

***The Celebration of Life for Manny Barros will take place on:
Wednesday, Feburary 23, 2011 @ 10am at the Keefe Funeral Home, Five Higginson Ave(Off Smithfield Ave)., Lincoln, RI. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 22,2011 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. During the calling hours there will be a Musical Tribute featuring local artists from both near and far.

Saratoga Sunset from Middletown, Rhode Island 2/12/11

USS Saratoga
Photo compliments of: James Clayton Sattel

Saratoga was decommissioned at the Naval Station, Mayport, Florida, on 20 August 1994and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register the same day. She was towed to Philadelphia in May 1995, then, upon deactivation of the Philadelphia Navy Yard in August 1998, to Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island. There, she was first placed on donation hold, then her status was changed to "disposal as an experimental ship", and finally she was returned to donation hold on 1 January 2000. While a hulk at Newport, ex-Saratoga, like her sisters, has been extensively stripped to support the active carrier fleet. There was an active effort to make her a museum ship in Quonset Point in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. In April 2010 the Saratoga was removed from donation hold and scheduled to be disposed of.

Rewired" at the Hard Rock Café Boston Grand Opening Last Night 2/11/11

The year 2010 may be remembered as the one when dance music made a return to the mainstream. And here's an omen that 2011 will see the trend grow: Rewired, the first club night at the Hard Rock Café Boston (22-24 Clinton Street, Boston, 617.424.7625), a mass-appeal tourist mecca with a permanent display of artifacts from commercial rock artists. Leading the party is DJ Joe Bermudez, whose work melds Top 40 pop with house-style dance. (He's remixed everyone from Rihanna to Katy Perry.) And the Hard Rock hasn't just been rewired, but restructured: a new side entrance ushers guests directly into the Cavern Club space, now outfitted with plush booths and a new lighting system. The adjacent green room, a pre-performance space where acts like Aerosmith relaxed before taking the stage, is now a special VIP area where about 100 lucky partiers (selected through promos or handpicked for hotness) can escape from the dance floor with a flat-screen TV, an Xbox 360, and private wait service. Consider it a dance revolution. Cover is $10.

Last but not Least~Hot Toddy on Valentines~L'Elizabeth Providence

Or how about just the two of you, comfortably seated in a warm, cozy atmosphere. Great conversation & a nice hot drink?

L'Elizabeth located at 285 S. Main St. in Providence, is just this place. With this quiet and intimate atmosphere, one can't help but fall in love all over again.
Sweet, pure and simple! It's that easy......
Ask for a Chocolate Kiss, a specialty drink made from Godiva chocolate liqueur and topped with whipped cream. An international selection of coffees pays homage to many international countries.
Ceylon, England and China are honored through teas.

The Scene – If everyone took a favorite piece from their grandmother's living room and brought it to a centralized location, you'd have a good chance of recreating L'Elizabeth's interior. The comfy sofas, ceramic lamps and antique coffee tables blend to create a romantic atmosphere that dates back to an era older than its 1973 founding. With the average age of patrons hovering around 50, it's obvious that those who discovered this spot in their heyday keep coming back for more. The Draw? Drinks here are as traditional as the decor: bourbon, scotch, sherry, port & cognac!

Back to School I go!!!

Hi everyone,
My aplogies for being M.I.A.
I have been busy preparing, testing and finally got my results! I will be attending MASSAGE THERAPY School here in Rhode Island. One of the best in this field I might add. After a long hard road, many decisions and having the passion to finally get to do what I have always wanted and talked about for years, (16 years to be exact), I will become a student again. A working one at that.
My classes officially start Tuesday, so a Big SHOUT OUT to my Facebook Friends and my Family in support! If I am not on there as much as I used to be, I apologize. I will miss you! But, you will know where I am! Feel free to write on my Wall with any support you may want to throw my way, those of you who have done this, I'm sure know what I am taking on.
I will be taking Day Classes as I want to finish in 8 months. The evening program is a year and 1/2. Too long for Me. I am anxious to pursue this and start working.
Thank you for all your well wishes!!
This journey will be "new" and "intersting" to Me. Another labor of love that I can add to my already filled resume of experiences!
More importantly, I'm looking to make all my friends feel better and relieve the Stress from their Bodies, Mind, Soul and Hearts!

Sincerely,
Susan

"The Lion King" rolls back into Providence at the PPAC

February 1-20. There's no greater magic than this stage to be lit up by this amazing production!
I had the good fortune of seeing "The Lion King" the first time it was here. If you
haven't had the opportunity, well now's you chance!
I have been to Africa and what I found so amzing was the costumes and how the people brought the animals to life! Julie Taymor, a director and designer well known for mythical staging inspired by international theatrical forms brought this to life!
Simply amazing!
